6 Query Tuning Techniques That Will Solve 75% Of Your Performance Problems – v2
by Amit Bansal
In version 2, you will see six more real-world examples to solve 75% of your SQL Server performance problems. I will spend 10 minutes on each one with crisp demos. I will run the query, capture the metrics, troubleshoot and diagnose the slowness, and finally, fix it. Exactly like you would do on a production server. Join this session for some real-world stuff. And yes, watch v1 before joining v2.24 June, 2021 09:30 AM ET

DAX: Calculated Column vs. Measure
by Markus Ehrenmueller-Jensen
DAX (Dynamic Analysis Expressions) is a formula language to enrich imported data with calculated columns, calculated tables and measures in Power BI, Excel and Analysis Services. While the syntax of the language is derived from Excel’s formula language and easy to learn, some of the functions are hiding a complex semantic. This talk starts on a zero DAX knowledge level but will introduce advanced concepts. We will concentrate solely on numeric calculations. You will learn the difference between calculated columns and measures and between row context and filter context. We will discuss how CALCULATE operates. Markus will gently walk you through different examples of increasing complexity which will pick your brain – don’t forget to bring your favorite hot beverage to stay focused during this 60min!13 July, 2021 11:30 AM ET

Execution plans … Where do I start?
by Hugo Kornelis
SQL (the language) is not a third generation language, where the developer tells the computer every step it needs to take. It is a declarative language that specifies the required results. SQL Server itself will figure out what steps it takes to get to those results. Most of the time, that works very well.
But sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes a query takes too much time. You need to find out why, so you can fix it. That’s where the execution plan comes in. In the execution plan, SQL Server exposes exactly which steps it took for your query, so you can see why it’s slow.
However, execution plans can be daunting to the uninitiated. Especially for complex queries. Where do you even start?
In this session you will learn how to obtain execution plans. and how to start reading and understanding them.

Bedazzling Your Bookmarks & Buttons
by Reid Havens
Bookmarks and Interactive Buttons are two of the best ways to add web-like user experiences into Power BI reports. Bookmarks help create a more seamless filter and navigation experience. Buttons can be used with bookmarks, but can also be leveraged for a lot of other report functionality and navigation.29 July, 2021 11:30 AM ET

Let SQL Server Be the Central Hub For All Types of Data
by Niels Berglund
Each day we get more and more data, and to stay competitive, we need to use that data; we need to integrate it, manage it, and analyze it. The problem is that the data comes in all shapes and types; relational data, NoSQL, files, etc., and the volumes can be in the Peta Byte range. So how do we integrate, manage and analyze all this data?

The solution to this is SQL Server 2019 Big Data Cluster (BDC). The BDC is not your dad’s SQL Server; no, it is an entirely new “beast”. A BDC is a cluster of “things”. When you deploy the BDC, you deploy a scalable cluster consisting of SQL Server (multiple instances in fact), Hadoop File System (HDFS), and Apache Spark. By having these components in the cluster, you can process and analyze massive amounts of data, not only relational data but also big data.

This session gives you a high-level overview of what a SQL Server Big Data Cluster is and what you can do with it. Some of the topics we look at are:

* The architecture of a BDC (SQL On Linux, Kubernetes).
* Apache Spark and HDFS.
* Data Virtualization and PolyBase
